Join Friends of Merrymeeting Bay (FOMB) for a special tour of well-known Six River Farm in Bowdoinham at 4:30 on August 19th. The tour, running about an hour will be followed by FOMB’s Annual Meeting and potluck supper.
Located along the shores of Merrymeeting Bay, Six River Farm grows about 22 acres of mixed organic vegetables on approximately 40 acres that owners Nate Drummond and Gabrielle Gosselin own and or manage. The farm operates in Kennebec alluvial soils on both sides of the Abbagadasset River and besides restaurant sales, brings a wide range of organic vegetables to area farmers markets, with the addition of organic berries, cut flowers and organic seedlings in season. At the farmers markets and their farm stand on Centers Point Road, they only sell what they grow and everything from the farm is certified organic by the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardiners Association (MOFGA).
For years, FOMB held their annual meeting in January combined with a potluck supper and a presentation as part of their now 30 year Winter Speaker Series. Then the pandemic hit and the group switched their winter programs to a Zoom format with annual Board elections via mail-in ballots. The Zoom-based speaker series continues to work well allowing participation of FOMB members and others from anywhere in the world and so the group has switched their annual meeting/potluck to outside in the summer.
Pre-registration is appreciated for this event as chairs must be rented. The public is welcome to the farm tour, brief annual meeting and potluck supper, all to be held at 513 Browns Pt. Rd. in Bowdoinham. Pre-register with Ed Friedman at 666-3372.
The FOMB Summer Outside! Series is the warm weather counterpart to FOMB’s popular Winter Speaker Series beginning this season on October 14th. Events are usually free and are open to the public. Pre-registration is required unless otherwise noted. FOMB’s next outing will be An Evening with the Stars featuring Rob Burgess of Southern Maine Astronomers on September 3rd from 7:30-9:30 pm outside in Bowdoinham. This is followed closely on September 5th from 8:00-10:00 am by a Bird Walk with local Ornithologist Will Broussard, also in Bowdoinham. The Bay is home to a wide variety of habitats and birds and is designated a Globally Important Bird Area by the American Bird Conservancy. Finally, this Outside Series wraps up with a “Wildlife Walk/Taxidermy Talk”, September 9th at the Bowdoinham Public Library from 6:00-7:00 pm. Pre-register with Ed Friedman at 666-3372.
