To celebrate National Trails Day
and kick off the start to their 2009 Summer Outside! Series, join Friends of Merrymeeting Bay (FOMB) on Saturday June 6th at 2 pm for an enjoyable hike at the breath-taking Green Point Farm Wildlife Management Area in Dresden.

Spend the afternoon learning about the ecology of Merrymeeting Bay while hiking with FOMB’s Executive Coordinator, Misty Gorski. This hike to the Bay is sure to excite the naturalist in anyone as they experience the landscape, agriculture and wildlife making this management area one of the most memorable hikes in the Merrymeeting Bay area. Green Point provides picturesque views of Swan Island, the mouth of the Eastern River and the remarkable Kennebec River.

This 432 acre farm, now owned and managed by the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, was protected in 2000 by the original owner Bob Gleason and the work of the Maine Wetlands Protection Coalition. Schedule permitting, Gleason expects to join the trip on Green Point itself to speak of the farm’s history. Funding was provided by the North American Waterfowl Conservation Act and the Nature Conservancy to ensure the conservation of this remarkable place.

Pre-registration is required for this event. To register, please contact Misty Gorski at 582-5608 or fomb@gwi.net <mailto:fomb@gwi.net> .  Please dress for the weather, wear appropriate footwear (some places might be wet) and bring water to drink. Hikers will meet at the Green Point Farm Wildlife Management Area parking lot, located next to the green shed off route 128 in Dresden about ¼ mile north of the Eastern River bridge.

The next FOMB Outside 2009! event will be our annual Merrymeeting Bay Clean-up, in Bath and Bowdoinham, on June 13th at 9:30 a.m. as part of National River Clean-Up week.
