Recent PFAS sampling on August 18 and 19 by FOMB on and around the former Brunswick Naval Air Station (BNAS) continues to show extraordinarily high levels of PFAS chemicals on site and working their way through the Brunswick Sewer District (BSD) into the Androscoggin River and most certainly into sewage sludge although FOMB has never tested the sludge (euphemistically biosolids now by the industry and regulatory agencies). The EPA has finalized enforceable drinking water Maximum Contaminant Limits (MCLs) for PFOA (4.0 ppt), PFOS (4.0 ppt), PFHxS (10.0 ppt), PFNA (10.0 ppt), and GenX (10.0 ppt). For mixtures containing two or more of PFHxS, PFNA, GenX, and PFBS, EPA has set a Hazard Index MCL at 1. In a pit outside Hangar 4, part of the BSD system, we found total PFAS levels of 504,380 ppt! In this sample PFOA levels were 2,100 ppt, PFOS was 30, 439 ppt, PFHxS at 11,541 ppt, PFNA was 207 ppt and GenX <1ppt. FOMB continues monitoring in this area, making the public aware and pressuring the Navy and Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority to clean up this mess. All of our PFAS sampling results can be found on the Chemical page of our Cybrary.
